What is a rebuilt Piano? 
We rebuild our pianos in Detroit. Every Item is removed from the piano. It is completely disassembled down 
to the bare wood. Every part that can wear out is replaced. When we are done it looks like new. Even an expert cannot tell. the only way to tell it from a new is look up the serial number in a book.
We almost never replace the sound board. This is a critical component in the tone of the instrument. Steinway advises to repair it unless it is clearly beyond repair. We fill the cracks in the sound board with a special very thin slice of wood called a sound board shim. Then they are sanded smooth and refinished.
The moving parts are called the action. We replace the action on the Steinways with a Renner action from Germany. This is the original action on the Steinways sold in Germany.
